Visitor Information

Here is a brief overview of some of the Visitor Attractions in our area. Situated on the Keji Scenic Drive between the historic towns of Annapolis Royal and Liverpool, Caledonia and North Queens is a great base from which to explore the whole of South West Nova Scotia.

Kejimkujik National Park

Kejimkujik National ParkThe Caledonia/North Queens area is adjacent to the only inland National Park in the Maritimes. If you enjoy canoeing, hiking, and camping, this Park, with its abundant lakes and river and gently rolling landscape is the destination for you. The Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife and several endangered species. A full interpretive program and both wilderness and semi-serviced camping enhance the experience.

North Queens Heritage House Museum

The rich history of this area of Nova Scotia is displayed here in this restored 19th century house. You can find out about the "gold rush" of the 1890's, the glory days of hunting, fishing and guiding, and get a feel for what life was like for the early Scottish and Irish settlers of the "Northern District".

Queens County Fair

The longest-running county fair in Nova Scotia was started in 1880, and since 1886 the Fair has taken place every September at the now-historic site in Caledonia. During the year, however, many events take place on the fairgrounds, including the community's weekly Farmers' Market (held Saturday mornings from May through October).

Cameron's Lake Provincial Park

This picturesque picnic site is popular for its charming bridge and shady picnic area along the Medway River. It's located near the site of the home of the first settler in the Northern District, William Burke.

McGowan Lake Fish Hatchery

This facility, opened in 1987, is operated by the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and was developed to help ensure the future of trout fishing in western Nova Scotia where there are many acid-stressed lakes and streams. About one million speckled (brook) trout are raised here annually and released as fall fingerlings or yearlings. The Hatchery is open to the public and offers tours at its site near Harmony.
